Coffee tastes best when it’s fresh. So, how can we take the measures at home to ensure our coffee stays that way?

Some people have said many tips and tricks, but some are not applicable or do more harm than good.

Why is coffee storage important?

There are many well-known rules about how to keep the food that the family loves fresh. For example, vegetables and cheese need to be stored in the refrigerator, tomatoes need to be placed out of sunlight, and so on. This is exactly the same as our favorite morning coffee drink. If it is not stored correctly, it will not be in the best condition. Coffee is a food, and like all foods, it reacts with oxygen and becomes stale over time. The taste and aroma make coffee delicious, but old coffee is not our best choice.

How to store coffee at home

Coffee is best consumed within one month after roasting. This does not mean that you cannot drink coffee within one month of the roasting date. So after buying coffee, the correct storage method is very important.

Reducing contact with air, especially with oxygen, is a simple way to improve the way you store coffee at home.

If the coffee packaging has a zipper, I usually put the coffee in the original packaging. Because the zipper lock will help prevent oxygen from entering the bag. Otherwise, I will change to another package, such as a jar. But remember that coffee should be stored in an opaque container to prevent sunlight from reacting with the coffee beans.

We can also vacuum-pack coffee using a vacuum packaging machine. These completely remove the air in the bag, and there is almost no air in it. The vacuum-packed coffee can be directly put into the refrigerator, so that it can prevent the coffee from absorbing high moisture content and potential odor from the inside of the refrigerator and thereby changing the flavor more quickly.

Moisture, light, and heat all cause coffee to deteriorate. Therefore, coffee needs to be stored in a cool, dry, and dark place. At the same time, it is best to keep it away from any food with a strong smell, or away from an environment with a lot of smell.

Whole beans are easier to preserve than pre-ground coffee, which deteriorates faster. Because the surface area of ground coffee is increased, the rate at which oxygen reacts with it is increased.

Buying a larger coffee bag also means that the fresh coffee will not be used for longer, which will cause the coffee to deteriorate. But if it is not possible to obtain smaller bags more often, it is best to follow the rules of storing coffee in a cool, dry and dark place and grind it yourself if possible. Therefore, when buying coffee, increase the amount of coffee stored according to the type and amount of coffee you buy.

In addition to the type and quantity of coffee purchased, the choice of coffee packaging also plays an important role in storing coffee at home. The right coffee packaging makes storing coffee at home simple and effective, and if done well, it means you can make the most of the coffee you buy.
