For the EU Market
EU food-contact recycled plastics are governed by Regulation (EU) 2022/1616 alongside the wider food-contact framework.
At present, the regulatory pathway for mechanically recycled PE from post-consumer waste is more restricted than the established food-contact recycling route for PET.
For this reason, BioPack would not recommend specifying generic mechanically recycled PCR PE as the direct food-contact layer of an EU food pouch without clear supporting compliance evidence for the exact application.
For many flexible food packaging projects, a more practical approach is to evaluate PCR within a carefully engineered multilayer PE structure, while separately controlling the food-contact layer and overall regulatory compliance.
A good PCR pouch is not necessarily a pouch with the highest possible recycled percentage.
It is a pouch that introduces recycled content without creating problems elsewhere in the package.
